Martin Store - Restored Grocery Store Stay

24180 State Route 93

Creola, Ohio 45622

Built about 1920 by Samuel Jarrett Martin from oak he harvested and cut on his  property, this wonderful country store building once stood beside  busy cross-country US 50 as it passed through rural Vinton County, Ohio. For many years it served up grub, groceries and gas, along with country hospitality to travelers and local residents.  For several recent decades it held only memories and cast-off items stored within its walls.  The building was donated to Historic Host  in 2012, and moved to Fiddlestix for preservation and restoration as a Guest lodging.

Now again  it welcomes travelers with all the comforts of home and some history, too! You’ll find a king-bed room for the grown-ups, and  two comfy flip-chairs that become beds for kids in sleeping bags.  Lining the walls are some original shelves and some that are reproduced to match; they are filled with period country-store artifacts you can carefully handle and play with. Your bathroom has modern water-saving fixtures along with an amusing little red cupboard re-purposed as a vanity.  Step up to the counter of your soda-fountain-style kitchenette where you’ll find kitchenware.  From your seat on a vintage stool, admire the restored pot-belly stove now used only for decoration.

Martin Country Store - Historical Lodging

Although our Martin Store was never a postal station, many country stores did serve as locations for mail pick-up, and we have acquired the antique postal station that purportedly once served the neighboring village of New Plymouth.  Outside, you’ll find a large, very typical “country store porch,” as well as a back deck with a view of the garden and woods.

So do come and “Sleep with History” and you’ll help us preserve and share our local heritage!
